Dealing with rough, dry skin in the wintertime is a common thing, but it's nothing to freak out about.  All you need to do is incorporate a few new skincare habits during the harsh winter months to get your skin feeling as smooth and soft as a baby's bottom. 

EXFOLIATE  

Exfoliating is one of my favorite things to do when it comes to taking care of my skin. The purpose of the whole process is to smooth out the surface of your skin by removing the dry and flaky cells. It helps to even out the surface of your skin while also minimizing discoloration. 

Some people think they only need to exfoliate when they shave, but why not treat your skin on your normal shower days as well. Exfoliation shouldn't be done too often since it can irritate the skin and lead to dryness. I recommend using sugar scrubs about 2-3 times a week while always moisturizing your skin afterward. 


MOISTURIZE 

Keeping your skin moisturized is a MUST when it comes to achieving soft skin. I'm not talking about slapping on some lotion once a week when you notice your ashy, but consistent and thorough moisturizing. It has been a habit of mine for years to apply oil or a good quality lotion to my skin daily after showering. This has caused my skin to be remarkably soft, and if I go a couple of days without applying lotion you couldn't even tell. 

I recommend using cocoa butter lotion since it has a reputation for being very beneficial to the skin in many different aspects. It also has a sweet, natural scent that isn't too heavy. If you don't want to use lotion or oil on your skin daily then just doing it 3-4 times a week after showering can make a big difference.



PROTECT YOUR SKIN 

The harsh winter air is a major factor that causes your skin to dry out and acquire that rough feeling. It's best to protect your skin from this menace when you know you will be outdoors for a good period of time. I know everyone wants to look cute all year round but sometimes you gotta bundle up because trust me ashy skin is nowhere near cute.

You can also protect your skin by applying a moisturizing product to it before heading out into the harsh climate. I like to apply some Vaseline or cocoa butter on my skin and especially my hands since I am not a fan of gloves and most likely wouldn't wear them. Putting on a layer of moisture before leaving your home can help you out in the long run.


DRINK YA WATER 

I saved the best and most annoying tip for last...Drink lots of water! I know drinking water can be annoying and hard to do. It is a good practice to drink 7-8 cups a day. Drinking a good amount of water keeps the inside of your body hydrated which leads to having hydrated skin.

If you feel overwhelmed at that prospect of drinking 7-8 cups a day then just start with about 4-5 then work your way up. It can also be helpful to plan and schedule when to drink your water. Such as a cup at breakfast, dinner, lunch, before bed, etc.

It is also smart to have a tumbler with some nice cold water handy for whenever you get thirsty instead of picking up Coke. I recommend drinking spring water since it is the purest and has the most alkaline pH level. The more you drink water, the less will you will crave that Coke and pretty soon you would have created a healthy habit.
